GUWAHATI, Aug 20 – Demanding the release of Jewel Gorlosa, chairman of Dima Halam Daoga (DHD-J), Niranjan Hojai, commander-in-chief of DHD(J) and other members of the outfit in jail, the Autonomous State Demand Committee, Dimasa Students’ Union, Dimasa Women Society and Karbi Students’ Association staged dharna on Friday at Dispur Last Gate.
The other demands of the organizations include release of Mohet Hojai, former Chief Executive Member of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, expediting the peace process with DHD(J), and resolution of the political demands of Dima Hasao district

Jatinga fights tourism jinx(SARAT SARMA)
Nagaon, Aug. 21: Dima Hasao is hoping to solve its tourism jinx with the famed Jatinga puzzle.
The district is planning a Jatinga festival from October 28, hoping to lure tourists to the district with the promise of the “supernatural” bird suicide mystery. Every winter, thousands of migratory birds fly to Jatinga and caught in the crosswinds were believed to “commit suicide”.
Though ecologists stripped the phenomenon of its paranormal aura and explained how the clueless creatures simply get distracted by the bonfires lit by tribal villagers and fall into their ingenious trap, the district is doing everything to turn it into a tourism booster.
Jatinga had long been marketed as this awe-inspiring must-visit for tourists to Dima Hasao (formerly North Cachar Hills) — with a bird-twist to the Bermuda Triangle story.
And the villagers did all they could to accentuate this “mystery”. They insisted that this “phenomenon” occurred only on moonless nights when the winds blew in a southwesterly direction and was followed by either dense fog or drizzle.
The administration now wants to throw in a few more attractions and turn the phenomenon into an event. The three-day festival will also have an exhibition showcasing traditional handicrafts and a cultural programme.
On its part, the administration is promising a “fear free” environment in a district scarred by insurgency.
“Since long our district hit the headline for wrong reasons. We want to establish that unlike militancy and Rs 1,000 crore scam we have a lot to establish our motherland before outsiders. We want to restore the district’s lost fame,” said organising committee general secretary Kulendra Daulogupu.
“Main problems include lack of security, lack of accommodation and bad communication. Tourists will stay with local people and will be able to enjoy traditional cuisine,” said organising committee chairman and local Jatinga council member Moril Massa.

Surrendered Dima Halom Daogah militants observe daylong hunger strike in Assam

Guwahati, Aug 21 (ANI): Surrendered militants of the Dima Halom Daogah outfit observed daylong hunger strike in Assam’s Cachar hills district on Friday in support of their leaders and seeking their early release.
Around 300 surrendered militants stayed without food at the designated camp at Jatinga village, accusing the government of backtracking on its promise to release their leaders.
One of the surrendered militants said the government had not kept its word though 100 days had passed since their surrender.
“Today we are on 24 hours’ hunger strike. We want our four chairmen, our chief of Dima Halom Daogah should be released and we came forward to surrender when government asked us to do so and also lay down the arms. And after that, we waited for 100 days, but still government didn’t satisfy our demands and till now our demands are not met,” said Naola Dimasa, a camp Commander.
Dimasa warned they would prolong their strike if the government did no relent.
“We are on hunger strike and after that if government will not think about it, we will extend our hunger strike for a week and again after that government will not satisfy our demand then all the cadres will move to the jungle,” he said.

Dimasa body protests handling of bandh
HAFLONG, May 23, 2010 – In protest against the inaction on the part of the district administration during the NC Hills Indigenous Students Forum-sponsored 60-hour Dima Hasao bandh, hundreds of members of the Dimasa Mothers’ Association gheraoed the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Friday.
They expressed concern over the way the bandh was handled by the civil and police administrations and demanded that the same mistake should not be repeated in future.
They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Dima Hasao district Dilip Borthakur stating that the picketeers made a mockery of Sec 144, banning gathering of more than five persons, carrying lethal weapons etc.
The memorandum maintained that the bandhs in Dima Hasao district have always been peaceful. “But in the past month we have seen three bandhs and none were peaceful. Perhaps in his report to the Government he must have said that the bandh passed off peacefully without any untoward incident occurring but was that a fact?”, the demonstrators asked.
In the first bandh call, the SP was hit a stone from a catapult and stones were pelted at the police which led to firing.
The message he has passed by his in action was that the public should look for their own security because the civil and police administration would only react when they were hit and attacked. As long as the bandh supporters go on destroying public and government properties, burning buses and boats, uprooting rail tracks, it was all fine.
The bandh supporter for three days held the town of Haflong to ransom. It must be stressed here when there was no resistance to the bandh from any side or any community why did the police turn a blind eye when the bandh supporters vandalized the town. Some steps should have been taken, they argued.
The DC assured the delegates of DMA he would not allow any kind of such activities in future.

CBI starts probe into 1000 cr Assam scam
Four members of a CBI team started inquiry from May 20. The team is staying at Haflong, headquarter of North Cachar Hills district, officials said.
The alleged of 1000 crore rupees scam in North Cachar Hill district involves reports of leakage of Central funds and the nexus between the politician-militant-bureaucrat-contractors, sources said.
It is to be mentioned that, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) recommendation for a CBI probe. The home ministry, through a letter (No. 11034/10/2009-IS-VI (Pt) dated February 23, 2010), asked the Assam government to order a probe by the CBI into the misappropriation of government fund in the district council.
The home ministry, with the approval of Union home minister P. ,had recommended CBI probe.
The NIA accused 14 people in the chargesheet, of whom 10 are now in jail in their investigation on the multi-crore scam.
Those who have been charge sheeted, mainly are DHD (J) chief Jewel Garlosa and commander-in-chief of the outfit Niranjan Hojai, chief of the NCHAC Mohit Hojai, arms dealer Vanlal Chana, Malsawmkimi and George Lawmthang and state social welfare department deputy director R H Khan.

AGP fires graft salvo at Cong

Guwahati, May 22: The AGP today alleged that the massive function the Tarun Gogoi government plans to organise tomorrow to mark its fourth anniversary is being funded by the ministers’ “black money”.
The AGP president, Chandra Mohan Patowary, said the Assam government, by spending a huge amount of money “to blow its own trumpet”, had shown that it was least bothered about the problems plaguing the state.
He alleged that corruption had peaked in nine years of Congress rule in the state and the Rs 1,000-crore scam in Dima Hasao district, formerly known as North Cachar Hills, was only the tip of the iceberg.
“As directed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the chief minister had asked his ministerial colleagues and MLAs to furnish detailed lists of their property and other assets in February this year. Surprisingly, till today, the ministers have not been able to submit their asset lists,” Patowary said. He claimed that the ministers had accumulated assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.
Accusing the state government of only showcasing central government schemes, Patowary said: “There is nothing to cheer about as the government has miserably failed in providing employment to 22 lakh jobless youths, implementing the Assam Accord, solving the perennial problems of insurgency, floods and erosion, besides agriculture and industrial crisis.”
“Apart from the central schemes, the Gogoi government has hardly taken up any development scheme on its own,” Patowary said. He said schemes like the National Rural Health Mission, National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and Indira Awas Yojana were initiated by the Vajpayee government.
