CBI starts probe into 1000 cr Assam scam

Four members of a CBI team started inquiry from May 20. The team is staying at Haflong, headquarter of North Cachar Hills district, officials said.

The alleged of 1000 crore rupees scam in North Cachar Hill district involves reports of leakage of Central funds and the nexus between the politician-militant-bureaucrat-contractors, sources said.

It is to be mentioned that, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) recommendation for a CBI probe. The home ministry, through a letter (No. 11034/10/2009-IS-VI (Pt) dated February 23, 2010), asked the Assam government to order a probe by the CBI into the misappropriation of government fund in the district council.

The home ministry, with the approval of Union home minister P. ,had recommended CBI probe.

The NIA accused 14 people in the chargesheet, of whom 10 are now in jail in their investigation on the multi-crore scam.

Those who have been charge sheeted, mainly are DHD (J) chief Jewel Garlosa and commander-in-chief of the outfit Niranjan Hojai, chief of the NCHAC Mohit Hojai, arms dealer Vanlal Chana, Malsawmkimi and George Lawmthang and state social welfare department deputy director R H Khan.

Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram will visit Assam on Wednesday, who meet Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and top civil and security officials to review the internal security situation and the recent tension between Assam and Meghalaya over the boundary.
